Founded in 2001, Confluence is a woman-owned business headquartered in Washington, DC with anchor offices in Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Portland, Oregon.
Our name represents the coming together of the founders’ three goals: (1) leveraging our expertise in technology services, (2) applying our talents to help those who help others, and (3) satisfying our entrepreneurial inclinations.
Dedicated to open source software solutions for our clients, Confluence is also an active supporter of the open source community. Working with this software is a natural extension of our historical focus on serving nonprofits, associations, and foundations while also providing a viable option for commercial clients.
Confluence also serves on boards and encourages a spirit of volunteerism among employees. We donate our time and energy to various causes and we regularly publish articles, attend events, speak at tradeshows, and generally serve as a professional resource to nonprofit and business leaders.
Give us an opportunity to discuss your needs and demonstrate our expertise. You can learn more about project costs and speak with past Confluence clients. You’ll see why we’re in a class by ourselves.
Lisa is the CEO and cofounder of Confluence. In addition to managing Confluence engagements and business development responsibilities, her direct work includes consulting in the use of software systems to achieve mission; information technology planning; the development of concepts and visions for the strategic use of technology from a holistic, organizational perspective; and planning specific technology projects involving complex, distributed information systems.
Lisa is active in the technology-for-nonprofits movement, and is a frequently invited speaker at conferences on nonprofits and technology across the country. She is on the faculty of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s Learning and Leadership Institute, and serves as a Guest Faculty at Tidewater Community College’s Academy for Nonprofit Excellence.
From 1993-2001, Lisa was a senior executive at commercial information technology (IT) services firms where she had profit and loss responsibility for IT services contracts of over $35M in annual revenue. From 1985 to 1993, she led a research group at General Electric’s corporate research laboratory in commercial applications of artificial intelligence, publishing widely. A previous visiting professor of computer science at the University of Pennsylvania, she served two terms on the board of directors of the YWCA of the National Capital Area. Lisa earned her B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. She continued on to earn her M.S. in computer science from U.C. Berkeley, with a concentration in artificial intelligence and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Exeter. Lisa has two children, and lives in Washington, DC with her husband of over 25 years. Lisa loves to travel all over the world, and is always happy when on her bicycle.
Jeff has been the Confluence president since cofounding the company with Lisa Rau in 2001. Jeff has twenty years experience in the information technology industry, with special expertise in the organizational issues associated with program creation and growth. Jeff’s direct service work includes managing high profile engagements, providing consulting on strategic technology assessments, and acting as the outsourced project manager for large IT implementations for our clients.
Prior to founding Confluence, Jeff was a deputy director at NCI Information Systems where he managed the execution and growth of a portfolio of over 35 million dollars of information technology services projects for the public sector. He also spent eight years at SRA International, managing the growth and operations of many public sector projects, most notably a $20 million set of contracts with the National Institutes of Health.
Jeff received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, magna cum laude from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has served on the board of directors of the West Springfield Little League, acting as the league’s chief umpire. Jeff is Confluence’s designated “out of the box” thinker—and can be counted on to come up with a minimum of three alternatives to any idea. He enjoys going to the movies with his two sons, is a walking wine encyclopedia, and loves to drink young red wine and drive his motorcycle (but not at the same time).
Karin, based in our L.A. office, leads Confluence’s creative services department, managing the organization’s identity and print design, web strategy, web design, and social media marketing projects. Her direct service work covers all of these areas as well.
Prior to joining Confluence, Karin ran a successful design boutique called little b for over ten years. little b performed design work for several hundred companies nationwide, both in the for- and non-profit arenas, and was acquired by Confluence in January 2012.
Karin worked for a handful of design firms in the Baltimore-Washington, DC area prior to forming her own company. Standout projects include being the lead designer for Al Gore’s 2000 campaign website and working on early identity design for Honest Tea.
Karin received a B.F.A. in graphic design, summa cum laude, from the American College in London. She lives in a renovated loft apartment in downtown Los Angeles with her husband, three dogs, and a cat.
Confluence’s staff includes 20 full time professionals and another dozen dedicated consultants. Our staff hold a variety of Salesforce.com and other certifications.
